This is a renowned temple of Lord Shiva which is famous for its special pooja’s offered to Rahu and Ketu (supposed to be unfavorable planets) and for reducing the unfavorable effects of Sarpa Dosha. This temple is located in Chittoor District at a distance of 37 kilometers from Tirupati.
Location and History:
The Temple is located on the banks of river Swarna Mukhi and hold a great significance in Hindu mythology. According to Brahma Puranam, three animals a spider (Sri), an elephant (Hasti) and a snake(Khaallam) fought among themselves over worshipping Lord Shiva and died. Lord Shiva along with his wife Goddess Parvati have appeared and given Moksha (Eternity) for these three animals and hence Lord Shiva in this sacred place is called Sri- Kala-Hasthiswara and the name of the town Sri Kalahasthi.
According to Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva is worshipped in five forms namely Air ( Vayu lingam), water(Jala Lingam), Sky( Akasa Lingam), Earth( Prithvi Lingam) and fire( Teja lingam) together known as Pancha Lingalu ( five basic elements of nature) to restore positive energy and eliminate the negative energy. This temple has Vayu Lingam and you can see the flickering of lamps inside the temple without any air.
In Ancient days people used to visit this temple along with other 4 temples located in Tamilnadu (remaining 4 temples of Pancha Lingalu) for Sadhana (Meditation) to attain moksha and to experience spiritual bliss. But as the days passed and invasions from various cultures took place, this type of spiritual atmosphere has been destroyed and the five temples have become only as the place for worship.
