Srikalahasti Temple

This is a renowned temple of Lord Shiva which is famous for its special pooja’s offered to Rahu and Ketu (supposed to be unfavorable planets) and for reducing the unfavorable effects of Sarpa Dosha. This temple is located in Chittoor District at a distance of 37 kilometers from Tirupati.

Location and History:

The Temple is located on the banks of river Swarna Mukhi and hold a great significance in Hindu mythology. According to Brahma Puranam, three animals a spider (Sri), an elephant (Hasti) and a snake(Khaallam) fought among themselves over worshipping Lord Shiva and died. Lord Shiva along with his wife Goddess Parvati have appeared and given Moksha (Eternity) for these three animals and hence Lord Shiva in this sacred place is called Sri- Kala-Hasthiswara and the name of the town Sri Kalahasthi.

According to Shiva Purana, Lord Shiva is worshipped in five forms namely Air ( Vayu lingam), water(Jala Lingam), Sky( Akasa Lingam), Earth( Prithvi Lingam) and fire( Teja lingam) together known as Pancha Lingalu ( five basic elements of nature) to restore positive energy and eliminate the negative energy. This temple has Vayu Lingam and you can see the flickering of lamps inside the temple without any air.

In Ancient days people used to visit this temple along with other 4 temples located in Tamilnadu (remaining 4 temples of Pancha Lingalu) for Sadhana (Meditation) to attain moksha and to experience spiritual bliss. But as the days passed and invasions from various cultures took place, this type of spiritual atmosphere has been destroyed and the five temples have become only as the place for worship.

Lord Shiva in the form of Vayu Linga and Goddess Padmavathi in the form of Gnanambikadevi are worshipped by hundreds of pilgrims daily. It is said that the effects of unfavorable planets like Rahu and Ketu along with Kuja Dosham, Kala Sarpa Dosham, and Navagraha Dosha can be nullified by performing special pooja in this place. The pilgrims, who visit Tirupati to worship Lord Balaji, also visit this place to worship Lord Shiva and restore peace in their homes.

The great devotee of Shiva, Bhakta Kannappa hailed from this place. The story goes that, Kannappa who was a cruel hunter and robber, was blessed by Shiva and so, he became a staunch devotee of Shiva. He has shown to people that devotion is the only thing that matters in the eyes of God and not the inequalities based on caste and wealth.

For Rahu and Ketu pooja, though the temple offers it from 6.00 AM to 6.00 PM daily, it is recommended to perform the ritual in Rahu kalam on Sundays and Tuesdays, as those two days are considered as auspicious to Rahu and Ketu. It is believed that one should sleep on the floor (Katika Nidra) a day before the Rahu Ketu pooja and after taking bath in the next morning, perform pala Abhishekam( milk bath) for the idols in Rudra Padam(which is located near Pathal Ganapati temple) before Rahu Ketu pooja. Offering food to the poor after completion of ritual is considered as the best method to gain the complete effect of the pooja performed. Though these things are not mandatory, some people perform them as these are our ancient customs.
